Uno al día

Old King – Neil Young en el Sarah McLachlan’s Benefit Concert del Ambleside Park de Vancouver el pasado día 12 de septiembre.

Ahora que está la cosa tranquila de descargas porque el Tío Neil está descansando de giras y similares, me estoy planteando aprovechar para inyectar unas vitaminas en mi ratio de Dime.

Y se me ocurre que como no tengo un plan prefijado, voy a compartir un concierto al día. El concierto del día en curso. Por lo menos mientras pueda.

Hace tiempo que no aparece por estas páginas algún concierto de Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. La verdad es que su dos últimos tours fueron cubiertos estupendamente y pocas cosas se quedaron en el tintero.

What Happened: Neil Young has earned a reputation as something of a belligerent performer over the years, or at least one stubborn enough to think it’s OK to play an entire album twice in a row and call it a gig. But anyone dreading two hours devoid of the classics and heavy on Chrome Dreams II was in for a treat. The 63-year-old obligingly played for his audience, kicking off with a hammering version of Hey Hey My My (Into the Black), before lunging straight into Mansion on the Hill.
The set was heavy on the Crazy Horse era, with a very, very extended version of Down by the River. There was time to zip through some acoustic numbers, including Heart of Gold, before he worked the crowd up into a frenzy with a version of Rockin’ in the Free World which included at least four blistering breakdowns and additional choruses. By the time he exited the stage at midnight, the crowd were chanting "Neil! Neil!", and he returned for an encore to perform the Beatles A Day in the Life.
High point: Young screaming "Yeaaaahh!" into the mic after breaking virtually every string on his guitar, which he then thumped with the mic stand. Getting in touch with his petulant rock star roots, we expect.

There’s some people blocking the image sometimes during the concert because the audience kept getting up and down in front of us, but this was a great concert that proved that Neil is still playing awesome tunes with his guitar and band!

I received it directly of the taper and only have shared it with Lestgo, for this reason I think that he has not circulated until now.

There is a concerto’s folder of photos. They are original photos taken by Jesus Lazaro and that I believe that you will like it . My gratitude to Jesus for his magnificent work.
The motive to add them the concerto is for motivating Dime’s artists to some nice title pages.

"A nuestros 20 añitos, el que Neil nos viniera a visitar a Bilbao fue como el gordo de la primitiva. Impensable.
En aquella época en realidad no nos fiábamos nada de lo que íbamos a ver y escuchar. Recuérdese que su último disco era Landing on Water. Había mucho, mucho miedo. No había setlists en internet, torrents, ni idea de qué iba a pasar.
Salen a escena. Cuando vemos a Billy talbot con un sinte de los de colgar en lugar de un bajo, oh, oh, ¿qué es esto?
Arrancan con Mr. Soul. El sonido recuerda a la versión del Trans, pero la voz es ""la de verdad"". La tocan con mucha fuerza y eso nos tranquiliza, así que, a disfrutar.
Vamos comprobando con alivio que no nos torturan con nada del Landing. A cambio van cayendo algunos temas de Life, que resultan agradables. Inca Queen nos parece sobrecogedora. Sólo When you´re lonely… Nos parece un pastelón.
Por otro lado, el concierto está lleno de grandes clásicos: Cinnamon, When You Dance, Down by the River, Goldrush, y alguna sorpresa: Drive Back, Opera Star… La fuerza monolítica de los Crazy es tremenda. A Neil se le ve aparentemente un poco fondón, pero está en forma y con ganas.
Y al final, en el bis, con Hey Hey My My a todo trapo, se corta repentinamente el fluido eléctrico y la sala queda a oscuras y los músicos sin amplificación. El público jalea y ellos, en lugar de largarse, que hubiera sido lo lógico, siguen tocando ""a pelo"". Neil se ilumina la cara con una linterna y sigue cantando a voz en grito. Los de las primeras filas le oíamos. Esto hace que el público salte y siga coreando la canción. Cuando entra el grupo electrógeno y se recupera la amplificación, pero con la luz de emergencia de la sala, la locura es total.

Bueno, acabo de colgar en Dime A Dozen la única grabación conocida del concierto de Bilbao de 1987. No es muy buena en cuanto a calidad de sonido; los medio técnicos de entonces no eran para tirar cohetes. Pero sin embargo, su valor documental es incuestionable: hasta el momento es la única que ha salido a la luz.

Y se lo debemos (nunca me canso de decirlo) al trabajo de un playero distinguido con la Ola de Honor 2008. Álvaro Rey. Al que espero tener la gran satisfacción de conocer personalmente en alguno de los conciertos de este año.

Y el trabajo de Álvaro no está completo si no conoces el de su amigo Jesús Lázaro. Un espléndido trabajo fotográfico del concierto y que pasó desinteresadamente a los amigos de la Playa.
