This fan-made compilation is the result of over a year of
planning, editing, writing, researching, and assembling and
was done as a labor of love.

On this first anniversary of the release of Neil Young’s
Archives Vol. 1, I present a collection of recordings, some
live and some studio, that are meant to supplement the
officially released material with high-quality, and other-
wise important recordings from Neil Young’s career up to
1972. Every effort was made to emulate the style and
standards displayed in The Archives in filling the "Holes".

The selected recordings are limited to unreleased songs,
or live or studio recordings of songs that are otherwise
unreleased with the given musicians. For example, there is a
studio recording of "Everybody’s Alone" with Crazy Horse
released on The Archives, but this set contains a studio
recording with CSNY. Also, there is a live recording of "Sea
Of Madness" with CSNY released on The Archives, but this set
contains a studio recording with CSNY.

los conciertos de 2010

Los primeros conciertos de la gira 2010 de Neil Young ya están disponibles en Dime a Dozen. Hasta ahora he escuchado ya los dos primeros y la calidad es muy buena.

El repertorio varía poco o nada de uno a otro pero… HAY 7 CANCIONES NUEVAS, completamente nuevas, presumiblemente pertenecientes al próximo disco que está en preparación.

Neil actúa en una especie de concierto semi-acústico, semi-eléctrico que produce una extraña sensación. No sabría decirte si positiva o negativa. La guitarra (la White Falcon, por cierto) suena como sólo Neil lo sabe hacer, pero luego permanece sola en el aire produciendo sonidos que parecen querer hacerte recordar a los Crazy Horse, pero desgraciadamente son solo recuerdos. Demasiado duros para un acústico, demasiado tiernos para un eléctrico. Un experimento extraño y original que habrá que esperar un poco para valorar como se merece. Lo siento Neil.

Los siete temas nuevos…

• You Never Call. Una bonita melodía que me recuerda a algo que no localizo en mi cabeza
• Peaceful Valley. Un tema tranquilo con estudiados juegos de guitarra en su interior que habrá que esperar a escucharlo tras sus arreglos definitivos.
• Love And War. En la línea del anterior aunque a mí me trae recuerdos a 1994 (Complex Sessions, Sleep with Angels…).
• Sign Of Love. A primera vista parece escapada de Greendale.
• Leia. No sé si a ti te pasará igual, pero a mí me recuerda a un tema inédito aun que vio la luz en el tour de 2007 y que también tenía un nombre muy corto: Try. ¿Será por el piano?.
• Rumblin’. Nuestro Tío Neil de siempre, al que estamos acostumbrados. Esta canción nos va a gustar, pero primero hay que convertir ese rumor en un trueno.
• Walk With Me. Una melodía corta pero creo que se va a convertir en unas de mis preferidas cuando nos la entregue con toda la ropa y no desnuda como ahora.

Repito, como experimento suenan… suenan, vale. Pero para mi gusto sonarían mejor con la electricidad del grupo emblemático de Neil Young. E incluso, si me achuchas un poco, sonarían mejor en una sesión acústica e intima. Pero no me hagas mucho caso. A lo mejor es que no estoy acostumbrado a la voz de Neil junto a su guitarra eléctrica en solitario, así a lo bestia.

Peter Gabriel y Philadelphia

El genio de GENESIS se atreve con un álbum de versiones,que incluye una versión de PHILADELPHIA. Es un placer oírla de la voz de Gabriel me recuerda a la canción de Genesis CARPET CRAWL. Mi impresión es que se parece totalmente a la canción original del Tío NEIL que es irrepetible aunque gracias a dios no se llevo el Óscar. GRACIAS por dárselo a Bruce.

The Dutch commentator Mart Smeets is a big (Americana) fan and told beforehand that he was looking forward to seeing Neil Young. But as Neil came on a bit unexpectedly, the commentator was still talking about Jacques Rogge’s speech when neil was announced, but got quiet almost immediately and only can be heard in the first few notes of LMYR.

I received this DVD in a trade and it had Down by the River with Phish from the 1998 edition on it too. Considering the fact that greeney55 has been providing us with some great DVDs of previous Farm Aid concerts, including the 1998 edition, I left it off to save some bandwidth (and hard drive space). For some reason the songs are out of order and Farmer John is missing, probably because it was compiled from multiple broadcasts. I don’t know for sure though. The setlist is as follows:

Extracts from original notes:

Opening for the Springfield were classmates Bob Wahler, and the band he played in, Hard Candy.

Bill Wardner played in Hard Candy (along with Bill Brumback, Mike Peters, and Rick Huhnke), and had the presence of mind to lug his Sony TC-200 stereo tape recorder to the gig.  Bill parked the recorder right onstage, and thus did not pick up the vocals very well.  But what you can hear is a band firing on all cylinders, and sounding great.

There has been a ton of misinformation out there about this gig.  Wrong dates, and even a bootleg LP ("Stampede") claiming to be the recording from Whittier High School.  (It wasn’t.)

El sonido no es muy bueno (¿has visto el año?) pero el documento es una rareza. Da gusto escuchar la voz (vocecita?) del Tío Neil por encima de los ruidos de las guitarras. Bluebird está de muerte, con lo que me reafirmo que the live music is better; y si es en la playa, todavía mejor.

Y este es de Hungercity, menos mal (yo me he registrado y entrado en menos de 1 minuto).

This was a one day festival in aid of Bill Graham’s S.N.A.C.K.(Students Need Athletics,Culture and Kicks) organization.
"The SNACK Benefit Concert was organized by Bill Graham in 1975 and was broadcast over the radio,and therefore there are many nice tape copies in circulation.This one time only mixture of Dylan/Band/Young was the featured act in a
full day’s concert that featured many local San Francisco bands,such as Santana and Jefferson Airplane.
The appearance of Neil Young and company was merely rumored and Dylan’s performance was a complete surprise.
Completely unrehearsed,some of this music is great,but mostly it’s just haphazard and rough."

Una maravilla de regalo para este primer día del año el que nos hace Jos desde Holanda. Ad Vanderveen, Kersten de Ligny y Jim Morrison, un fantástico trío holandés, interpretando canciones propias y algunas versiones como ese sentido y penetrante Mr. Soul que cerró el concierto. Aparte del hecho de que esto capta su primera colaboración pública como un dúo y por sí es un documento histórico digno de una edición oficial, la actuación misma es impresionante – desde “Simple Man” de Graham hasta "Traction In The Rain”del cierre de David.
Lo único reprochable es el sonido, que está lejos de ser de primera.
