La tercera vuelta de la gira de concierto de este año sigue creciendo. Mira en la barra lateral.

El mes pasado, tras las actuaciones de Neil en Nashville, la revista Rolliing Stone (o lo que queda de ella) publicó un artículo de Andy Green en el que calificaba el concierto como “función explosiva en la que Young saca joyas Crazy Horse”. Se nota que que este Andy es también un gran forofo de Crazy Horse.
Neil Young acometió anoche en el Ryman Auditorium de Nashville seis canciones en un aparentemente sosegado solo, en el que el roquero de 64 años de edad dejó estupefactos a sus admiradores que no esperaban esos sonidos en sus oídos. Poniendo en el suelo su guitarra acústica, ató la correa de su distintiva eléctrica Les Paul Old Black y empezó a moverse agitadamente en Down by the "River" como un hombre Crazy Horse. En las últimas cuatro décadas, las actuaciones de Young en solitario han sido asuntos decididamente “unplugged” — excepto esta vez, que sentí claramente como otra vez desafiaba las expectativas.
Young está a medio camino de grabar un álbum nuevo con el productor Daniel Lanois, y esta corta gira es una manera de evaluar el material nuevo. Pero antes de que Young revelase la música recién hecha, abrió con tres interpretaciones atractivas para la mayoría que sonaron a través del teatro, demostrando cómo su voz ha permanecido milagrosamente intacta en el tiempo: My My, Hey Hey (Into The Blue), Tell Me Why y Helpless. Tres canciones nuevas consecutivas siguieron, empezando por You Never Call, que parece ser acerca de la muerte reciente de su largo tiempo socio creativo L.A. Johnson. "Tú estás en la gloria sin nada que hacer", cantó Young con claro pesar en su voz. "La última vacación sin pena por regresar”. Peaceful Valley es un lamento acerca de la destrucción por el hombre de la frontera americana, desde los tiempos en que los pioneros mataron manadas de búfalos hasta el día presente, cuando el calentamiento global causa "que ríos antiguos estén en efervescencia". Otra canción nueva, Love and War, es un himno contrario a la guerra y una oportunidad para que Young reflexione sobre su modelo de antiviolencia. "Papá jamás volverá a casa" canta Young repetidamente a un niño que perdió a su padre. Más tarde, las primeras notas de una rendición particularmente chirriante de Ohio lanzaron a la audiencia a un frenesí, y la furia de Young sobre la masacre Kent State pareció tan fresca hoy como cuando escribió la canción hace exactamente 40 años.
La única canción antigua de la noche que no se originó en la era dorada de Young de 1969-1978 fue Hichhicker, un corte increíble de la era Harvest Moon, inédito, que él está esperanzadoramente considerando para el disco nuevo. Simplemente, en unos pocos minutos, la pista cuenta la historia entera de vida de Young — creciendo en Canadá, conduciendo su coche fúnebre de 1948 a California, tocando el éxito con Buffalo Springfield, rápidamente desencantándose de la fama, comprando su aislado rancho, su divorcio de Carrie Snodgress y finalmente encontrando la felicidad con su esposa, Pegi. Antes de tocar la canción nueva Leia el piano, Young habló sus únicas palabras de la noche, brevemente explicó que la canción es un tributo para el miembro más nuevo de su familia. El texto de la canción, acerca del disfrute de una familia por un bebé recién nacido, fue agradable, pero la melodía fue desafortunadamente simple y repetitiva. Se mudó al órgano de fuelle para un espiritual After the Goldrush y al otro piano para una rendición de I Believe In You.
Young ha tocado Cortez the Killer incontables veces tanto acústicas y eléctricas, pero nunca lo había hecho como lo hizo anoche. Regresó a la Les Paul y creó una pared de distorsión y de realimentación con su palanca whammy al tocar en el instrumento los acordes verdaderos de la canción (un espectáculo raro). El set principal finalizóo con un Cinnamon Girl mucho más tradicionalmente arreglado. Ambos canciones suenan exquisitas acústicamente, y aunque en principio es extravagante observar a Young solo de pie en el escenario, tocando rock’n'roll furiosamente como cuando está con el resto de Crazy Horse, el efecto en cierta forma es frío. Tal vez la siguiente vez Young viene de visita, él finalmente dejará al Crazy Horse salir de la cuadra. Pero hasta entonces, él y Lanois tienen algún muy fuertemente material para esculpir en lo que podría ser el mejor álbum de Young entrado en años.

Por cierto… ¿ese órgano que tiene Neil detrás no es el que vimos el año pasado, verdad?
Los primeros conciertos de la gira 2010 de Neil Young ya están disponibles en Dime a Dozen. Hasta ahora he escuchado ya los dos primeros y la calidad es muy buena.
El repertorio varía poco o nada de uno a otro pero… HAY 7 CANCIONES NUEVAS, completamente nuevas, presumiblemente pertenecientes al próximo disco que está en preparación.
Neil actúa en una especie de concierto semi-acústico, semi-eléctrico que produce una extraña sensación. No sabría decirte si positiva o negativa. La guitarra (la White Falcon, por cierto) suena como sólo Neil lo sabe hacer, pero luego permanece sola en el aire produciendo sonidos que parecen querer hacerte recordar a los Crazy Horse, pero desgraciadamente son solo recuerdos. Demasiado duros para un acústico, demasiado tiernos para un eléctrico. Un experimento extraño y original que habrá que esperar un poco para valorar como se merece. Lo siento Neil.
Los siete temas nuevos…
- You Never Call. Una bonita melodía que me recuerda a algo que no localizo en mi cabeza
- Peaceful Valley. Un tema tranquilo con estudiados juegos de guitarra en su interior que habrá que esperar a escucharlo tras sus arreglos definitivos.
- Love And War. En la línea del anterior aunque a mí me trae recuerdos a 1994 (Complex Sessions, Sleep with Angels…).
- Sign Of Love. A primera vista parece escapada de Greendale.
- Leia. No sé si a ti te pasará igual, pero a mí me recuerda a un tema inédito aun que vio la luz en el tour de 2007 y que también tenía un nombre muy corto: Try. ¿Será por el piano?.
- Rumblin’. Nuestro Tío Neil de siempre, al que estamos acostumbrados. Esta canción nos va a gustar, pero primero hay que convertir ese rumor en un trueno.
- Walk With Me. Una melodía corta pero creo que se va a convertir en unas de mis preferidas cuando nos la entregue con toda la ropa y no desnuda como ahora.
Repito, como experimento suenan… suenan, vale. Pero para mi gusto sonarían mejor con la electricidad del grupo emblemático de Neil Young. E incluso, si me achuchas un poco, sonarían mejor en una sesión acústica e intima. Pero no me hagas mucho caso. A lo mejor es que no estoy acostumbrado a la voz de Neil junto a su guitarra eléctrica en solitario, así a lo bestia.
